Mainz (dpa) - After the fatal rampage of a car driver in Trier, the motive for the act is still unclear.

The man had not given any clear information in the previous interrogations, said the Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Roger Lewentz (SPD) on Friday.

According to previous knowledge, the 51-year-old suspect drove an off-road vehicle through the Trier pedestrian zone at high speed on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Lewentz, he had apparently run over people in a targeted manner.

Five passers-by were killed, including a baby just a few weeks old.

18 other people were injured, six of them seriously.

On Thursday, the city remembered the victims and their families with a minute's silence.

At 1:46 p.m. numerous citizens paused, at the same time the church bells were ringing throughout the city.
