Berlin (dpa) - After the new billion-dollar rescue package for the travel company Tui, the Verdi union insists on securing jobs.

"Now it is up to Tui to use these funds in a forward-looking manner and to guarantee employees safe and, above all, existential jobs," said Verdi Vice President Christine Behle on Thursday.

She spoke out against further cuts for employees.

Behle, who welcomed what is now the third aid package, warned the group to stop relocating jobs abroad.

The FDP and the CDU economic wing are warning of the state joining the group that has come under pressure in the Corona crisis.

The state is already supporting Tui with three billion euros.

On Wednesday, the world's largest travel company from Hanover agreed on a further financing package totaling 1.8 billion euros with the federal government, private investors and banks.

The federal government in particular is involved in what is now the third rescue package.

Ultimately, the federal government could in future be directly involved in the group through so-called silent participations, some of which could be converted into company shares.

The approval of the EU Commission is still required

In addition to air traffic and gastronomy, the tourism industry is particularly hard hit by the decline in demand in the corona pandemic.

The economic council of the CDU warned against a direct participation of the state in the travel agent.

"It must be clear that in addition to the provided liquidity aid, direct state holdings in private companies in the social market economy are only possible as an absolute exception," said Secretary General Wolfgang Steiger.

"In the case of a tourism company, this would not even be an interim solution."

State holdings would be particularly tricky if politicians wanted to use them to secure permanent influence over companies.

Steiger also warned “against possible distortions of competition vis-à-vis smaller medium-sized tourism companies”.

Politicians must prevent large companies from creating a better starting position for themselves through their often easier access to state aid.

FDP parliamentary group Vice Michael Theurer criticized the aid package as hostile to SMEs.

Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) will be “sadly remembered as the nationalization minister who nationalized corporations with billions in subsidies and the small and medium-sized enterprises still owe the existential and promised help”, Theurer told the “Handelsblatt”.

After the state aid for Lufthansa, the financing package for Tui is “the next fall from grace”.
