- 2020 will most likely be one of the three warmest years ever, writes WMO in its annual climate report and adds that at the moment it looks like it will be the second year in history since the measurements started in 1850.

The main reason for the rising temperature of the earth is the increased emissions of greenhouse gases.

According to the WMO, emissions rose to new record levels in 2019 and have continued to rise in 2020, despite the fact that many expected a reduction as a result of the corona pandemic.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is now urging the countries of the world to work together to try to reduce emissions.

- In short, the planet is broken, he says, reports Reuters.

- Humanity for war against nature, it is suicidal.

The temperature has risen by 1.2 degrees

WMO states that the global median temperature during January to October this year was about 1.2 degrees higher than the temperature between 1850 and 1900 which is used as a "pre-industrial" comparison.

Only in 2016 has the temperature been higher.

WMO adds, however, that the difference between the warmest years is very small, which is why which year ends up at the top of the temperature league may change once the year is over.

Temperature increases vary in different parts of the world.

The temperature has risen most in the northern parts of Asia and the Arctic, where the average temperature has been as much as five degrees above normal.

But the southwestern United States, parts of South America and China have also seen large increases.

In Europe, the period January to October has been record hot.

However, there are also parts of the world where temperatures have been lower than usual, such as western Canada, northern India and southeastern Australia.

The goals of the Paris Agreement are in danger

In the so-called Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015, the countries of the world agreed to try together to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees.

According to many researchers, an increase above that level would lead to catastrophic climate change.

According to WMO, however, the chance is one in five that the temperature has exceeded that limit until 2024.

The UN has stated that climate change last year cost the world $ 150 billion and that air and water pollution kill 9 million people annually.
