Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Germany flag is divided into three parts: This is what the work of art by Michael Sailstorfer looks like, which is created in front of the state parliament in Mainz.

The six meter high and three meter wide strips of fabric in black, red and gold are each hung in a brass frame.

These frames are about ten meters high.

“There's air below.

The idea of these gates or sculptures is that you can go through below, ”said the award-winning artist of the German Press Agency before the test-hoisting of the three flags in Mainz on Thursday.

"It's also about reflecting on what these colors stand for, the distribution of the flag and what that can mean today."

This also includes the question of what democracy means today and what value it has.

Sailstorfer's work of art expressly refers to the black, red and gold flag from the Hambach Festival, which hangs in the state parliament, which is currently being renovated, and is one of the oldest.

The artist speaks of the “prototype of the tricolor”.

“It was also about creating a work of art that has a signal effect, is perceived and increases the quality of stay,” Sailstorfer explained his idea.

The flag refers to the surrounding architecture and urban planning elements.

One gate is oriented towards the state parliament balcony, the second towards the newly built state parliament restaurant and the third towards the electoral palace opposite.

About the flag fabric used, Sailstorfer says: "It is important to me that it has a certain transparency and lightness and that it shines through."

It's also about durability.

"That it is hard-wearing and durable in all weather conditions."
