Atsede Negash fled to Sudan when the war came to her hometown of Mai-Kadra.

She fled with children, grandchildren and neighbors.

"Tigers must not stay here," they said.

We heard that with our own ears.

You have to leave, they told us, so we got rid of only the clothes we had on our bodies, says Atsede Negash.

Most have come from Ethiopia to Sudan via the Tekeze River, which is a natural border between the countries.

Wadaje Hadush, who fed the cows when Ethiopian soldiers suddenly appeared and had to run for their lives, now stands by the river every day, hoping to see his wife and children again.

- I lie sleepless at night and do nothing but cry.

Life is not worth anything without my children, says Wadaje Hadush.
