Wiesbaden / Trier (dpa) - After the fatal rampage in Trier, the Interior Ministry in Wiesbaden does not see any increased risks in Hesse.

The attack in the neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate with an off-road vehicle "does not increase the risk for the citizens of Hesse", the ministry said to the German press agency.

In February, "the cowardly attack on people celebrating peacefully in Volkmarsen in northern Hesse" with a car and many injuries showed "that it is not only Islamist fanatics who use vehicles to seriously injure or kill as many people as possible in the shortest possible time".

"The Hessian police will understand the course of events in Trier in exchange with the Rhineland-Palatinate police and take into account with regard to existing and future protection concepts for the public space," said the Ministry of the Interior in Wiesbaden. "In principle, the protective measures for the citizens of Hesse are already at a high level and can be adapted immediately in the event of suspicions or indications of specific dangers to public safety." On Tuesday there was a rampage in an off-road vehicle in the Trier pedestrian zone. Five people died and 18 others were injured. An arrest warrant was issued on Wednesday against a 51-year-old suspect, including five murder charges. A minute's silence was planned for the victims on Thursday.
