Cologne / Berlin / Bremen (dpa) - The Cologne Administrative Court is dealing in an urgent procedure with allegations that illegal tropical wood is being used in the renovation of the naval training ship “Gorch Fock”.

A corresponding application against the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) was received on Tuesday, a court spokesman said on Thursday upon request.

The applicant is the German nature conservation ring.

The environmental organization WWF, for which the Naturschutzbund made the urgent application on behalf of the BLE, accused the BLE of stubbornly refusing to examine the legality of the wood in depth, despite information.

According to its own information, the WWF intends to stop construction and examine the rejections.

"The installation of the teak on deck is in progress," confirmed a spokesman for the Navy in Berlin.

But for everything else you have to contact the BLE.

"We are not responsible for checking timber imports."

The navy must also wait for the exam.

BLE spokesman Tassilo Freiherr von Leoprechting emphasized on Thursday that the proceedings were ongoing.

The examination has not yet been completed and the administrative court has set the BLE a two-day deadline, which expires on Friday at 3 p.m., he told the German Press Agency.

The “Gorch Fock” hit the headlines because of the exorbitant increase in renovation costs from initially 10 to 135 million euros.

The Lürssen shipyard in Berne on the Lower Weser is currently building the ship.

It is scheduled to sail again at the end of May 2021.

The Navy trains its officer candidates on the three-master.
