Former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing died last night at the age of 94, after testing positive for Covid-19.

In his message of condolence published by the Elysée on the day of Giscard d'Estaing's death, Macron recalled him as a "Servant of the State, a politician of progress and freedom".

"The indications he gave to France still guide our steps", "his death is a mourning for the French nation," Macron said.
