Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The heavy burdens for residents of nursing homes and their relatives during the first lockdown due to Corona should not be repeated: It is the aim of all those involved, "to prevent a renewed ban on visits, as it was unfortunately necessary in the spring", said the Rhineland-Palatinate Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD) after an expert talk on Thursday in Mainz.

"We are all working hard together towards this goal."

The participants in the conversation, including the Mainz virologist Bode Plachter and the hygiene specialist Wolfgang Kohnen, who also works at the Mainz University Medical Center, agreed, according to the ministry, that the possible benefits of restrictions would be disproportionate to the negative consequences would cause social isolation.

Experience in spring showed that hygienic measures are only effective if everyone is motivated to participate.

"Social isolation and restrictions would significantly reduce this necessary motivation," said the ministry.

Bätzing-Lichtenthäler proposed the establishment of a Corona Care Advisory and Organization Team (CoBOP).

This team in the ministry should “support the care facilities as quickly as possible with coordinated help”.

As one of the current biggest problems, the ministry named the fact that the desired rapid tests could detect new infections in a short time - but that nursing staff might then have to be quarantined.

This may make operation more difficult in individual cases.
