The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai revealed an increase in the number of vehicles using Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, by about 250 thousand vehicles per month, as a result of the decrease in the response time to accidents and the duration of their evacuation, resulting from the trial operation of the joint traffic accident management service project between the authority and the Dubai Police General Command, adding that The next phase of implementing the project will be completed next year, covering about 425 kilometers in all the main streets, in which an additional number of patrols, up to 33, will be stationed.

The pilot operation of the project - which aims to rapidly intervene to eliminate accidents and manage traffic in the most efficient and rapid manner - was launched in September 2018, by providing 11 vehicle removal and transportation vehicles, and six vehicles to manage traffic accidents, along about 72 kilometers on Sheikh Muhammad Bin Road Zayed and Expo Street.

The Director of the Intelligent Traffic Systems Department at the Authority, Salah Al Marzouki, told «Emirates Today» that the work of the Dubai Center for Intelligent Traffic Systems (which was recently opened) will benefit the traffic accident management service project, whose implementation results were more positive than expected, especially In reducing the number of deaths, stressing that the decrease in the number of accidents and the increase in speed in vehicle movement as a result of the rapid intervention to evacuate accidents, contributed to the increase in the number of vehicles using Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street, by about 250 thousand vehicles per month.

He added that the response time for the incidents targeted for the implementation of the project on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road was 10 minutes, while 9.69 minutes were reached, and he was aspiring to reach the time taken to evacuate accidents to 15 minutes, and the time is currently about 13 minutes.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, the capacity of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is 12,000 vehicles per hour in each direction, in the six-lane section of the road, i.e. 24,000 vehicles per hour, and 576,000 vehicles per day. The capacity of the street, in the section consisting of seven lanes, is about 14,000 vehicles per hour in each direction, or about 28,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, and about 672,000 vehicles per day.

Al-Marzouqi expected that the implementation of the project will achieve more results and improvements in the level of traffic safety, due to the benefit of accurate data and information that will be collected through the technologies of the Dubai Center for Advanced Intelligent Traffic Systems, which in turn will enable the competent teams to monitor and analyze all factors and variables in the interest of taking appropriate decisions to improve Traffic management procedures at project implementation sites.

He pointed out that the information and data collected throughout the moment through the center's devices and cameras are used in the implementation of operational processes and decision-making in field sites, as a result of the continuous scanning of the streets and the road network through cameras, and are saved in the system and enhanced with graphics and images, to be used in Traffic studies and analyzes required to manage traffic, and to ensure smoothness and safety in the movement of vehicles.

Integrated technology platform

The Director of the Smart Traffic Systems Department, Salah Al Marzouqi, confirmed that the advanced central technical systems - used by the Dubai Center for Intelligent Traffic Systems in linking the traffic control system with the field devices installed in the streets such as counting devices, measuring travel times, monitoring the weather, and other smart devices - It will feed an integrated technological platform, whose mission is to collect and analyze big data, and to help support real-time decision-making to manage traffic, accidents and mega events, such as Expo 2020.
