Munich (dpa / lby) - The Turkish police arrested a gang of false police officers in Izmir, against whom an investigation was also carried out in Bavaria.

As the Munich police announced on Thursday, citing the Turkish media, 31 alleged employees and operators of an illegal call center were arrested in Izmir on Wednesday.

How many cases of fraud they could have been responsible for was unclear.

During the arrests, 1.5 million euros, 200,000 US dollars, five kilos of gold, several wristwatches and five illegal firearms were seized.

Among those arrested is a 31-year-old who is considered to be the inventor of telephone fraud by false police officers, said Andreas Huber, head of the Munich police department for organized crime.

However, he did not comment on the suspicion in detail.

In the department, the “Working Group Phenomena” has been investigating the fraudsters who repeatedly trick people with their scams since 2017.

Those arrested are said to be responsible, among other things, for several cases of fraud in Munich.

In one case, the fake police officers allegedly persuaded a 70-year-old to sell her house for 2.9 million euros and invest the money in diamonds, among other things, to give to the fraudsters.

The arrests on Wednesday were only an "interim success," said a police spokesman.

In Turkey, more fraudsters are active with call centers, as last November showed a wave of around 150 calls from false police officers in Munich.
