Rostock (dpa) - The railway and transport union (EVG) reacted with annoyance to the plans of the shipping company Stena Line to move from Rostock to Hamburg.

At the same time, the ferry "Mecklenburg Vorpommern" is to sail under the Swedish flag.

The management of Stena Line wants to maximize profits and let the employees foot the bill, said the head of the EVG office, Anke Brauer, on Thursday in Rostock.

"We expect a fair transfer of personnel, in other words an appropriate social plan for all employees."

On Wednesday, Stena Line justified the changes planned for spring 2021 by adapting to changing market conditions.

Hamburg is one of the leading locations for the maritime industry and a logistical hub in the middle of Europe, said managing director Ron Gerlach.

The Kiel-Gothenburg, Rostock-Trelleborg and Travemünde-Liepaja (Latvia) routes departing from Germany are model services in the Europe-wide route network and will continue to be operated by Stena Line.

The re-flagging of the ferry is also in line with the goal of making administrative processes more efficient.

It was only in April that Stena Line closed the Sassnitz-Trelleborg route, the so-called royal line.

Brauer was shocked by the speed at which Stena Line was making the change.

The approximately 90 employees on the ferry would have to work under different tariff conditions, which they had not yet been told.

The Stena plans would be tantamount to breaking down employee participation.

Brauer criticized the fact that these plans put employees in uncertainty shortly before Christmas.
