Bonn (dpa / lnw) - The Bonn district court has sentenced a pensioner to six years and nine months in prison for killing his wife.

The former manager was found guilty of manslaughter and assault on Wednesday.

One night in May 2020, he strangled his 65-year-old wife with a nylon rope after an argument in the shower.

In the judgment the act was described as "extremely" brutal.

The 67-year-old defendant must have strangled his wife for at least four minutes until she was dead.

He then tied the ends of the rope to the shower faucet to create the appearance that his wife had killed herself.

The judges did not rule out the possibility that the man was less able to control the act because of a "depressive episode" - among other things with the unfounded fear of going blind - and because of heavy alcoholism.

The defendant had confessed to the killing in the process.

He did not want to comment on details.

He just said, "She offended me.

I loved her and I still love her. "

Shortly before the crime, he had bought an expensive car and decided to move to the Côte d'Azur.

His wife, who was still working as a doctor's assistant, had opposed the plans.

She is said to have been worried about her husband because he has changed strangely.

While in custody, the defendant said that he had ordered another bottle of beer from his wife on the evening of the crime.

But she told him he should get his beer from the cellar himself - or get someone to do it for him.

Then he should have gone into the garage and fetched the blue rope.
