Düsseldorf (dpa) - Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has called for corresponding regulations for all large ski areas across Europe to protect against corona after the ski lift operation was banned in North Rhine-Westphalia.

«This Christmas and the New Year are not suitable for a ski vacation.

The concern that the virus could get another attack is justified, ”Laschet told the German press agency on Wednesday.

The head of government of the most populous state in Germany also appealed to the citizens: "Please do not travel unnecessarily this year."

He expressly welcomes Austria's announcement not to ramp up ski tourism.

The governments in Europe with their diverse ski areas are jointly challenged.

“As a European partner, we are responsible for our people, but also for our guests.

It is therefore important to find a uniform regulation in all major ski areas, ”Laschet emphasized.

Ski lifts in North Rhine-Westphalia have to remain closed for the time being in accordance with the state's new Corona Protection Ordinance.

The ban imposed by the new regulation will initially apply until December 20.

Lift operators in the Sauerland are already disappointed.

Ski lifts are classified as leisure facilities in NRW.

Their operation is therefore prohibited for the time being.

In addition, hotels are currently closed.
