The identity of the girl could be clarified beyond any doubt, as the police announced on Wednesday morning.

The investigation into the cause of death continued.

According to previous investigations, the girl had left her parents' apartment unnoticed.

The exact circumstances are still unclear.

Winter temperatures prevailed in Fulda at night, and in the morning there was snow in the East Hessian city.

An extensive search for the girl had already started on Monday evening.

Special divers finally discovered the child's body in the canal on Tuesday afternoon.

How the girl got there is still unclear.

The police cordoned off the area around the site for further investigations.

The investigators are also investigating how the girl was able to disappear from the apartment.

Details on this and on the girl's family background were initially not disclosed.

During the extensive search, thermal imaging cameras and a dog squadron were used, among other things.

A drone with a thermal imaging camera was also used.

The girl was finally discovered by specially trained divers from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), so-called flow rescuers.
