A source in the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said that a high-ranking military commander belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was killed late Sunday evening inside Syrian territory near the Iraqi border.

The source explained to Al-Jazeera that the car he was inside was bombed by an unidentified drone.

He added that the leader - whose name was Muslim Shahdan - was killed after he finished a meeting with leaders of the Popular Mobilization Forces inside Iraqi territories.

He said that the bombing took place minutes after the car in which he was traveling had entered a desert border area inside Syrian territory.

He stated that the commander had 3 people in the car with him.

It is noteworthy that many Iranian officers have been killed in Syria during the past years.

These developments coincide with the funeral of the nuclear scientist who was recently assassinated near Tehran, in a complex process that Iran says the Israeli Mossad is behind.

The funeral was attended by Minister of Defense Amir Hatami, Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Guards Hossein Salami, Commander of the Quds Force in the Guard Ismail Qaani, Minister of Intelligence Mahmoud Alawi, Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Authority Ali Akbar Salehi, and a number of politicians and members of parliament.
