Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Thanks to a large donation, around 60 homeless people can be safely accommodated in hotels from December to April.

The organizers announced in Hamburg on Tuesday that the partners Alimaus, Hinz & Kunzt, Diakonie Hamburg and Caritas can continue their project from the spring.

The Hamburg company Reemtsma is providing another 300,000 euros for this.

The project partners reacted to the persistently high risk for those affected, especially in the cold season.

While the city has increased the number of places in shared accommodation in the winter emergency program, the alliance is relying on individual accommodation as the most effective corona protection.

The commitment also includes support by social workers and, if possible, regular food supplies as well as the provision of hygiene articles and clean clothes.

"Individual accommodation and a minimum of peace and privacy open up significantly better opportunities for prospects out of homelessness," said State Pastor Dirk Ahrens and head of the Diakonisches Werk Hamburg.

“Our hotel project therefore provides important information on the direction in which the accommodation system in Hamburg should be further developed,” said Ahrens.

At the beginning of the pandemic, after a donation from Reemtsma, the alliance had already housed homeless people in hotels and had good experiences with it: People were able to recover very well physically and mentally and were more accessible to further offers of help.

In some cases, the transition to employment subject to social security contributions and permanent accommodation was also successful.
