The situation of the imprisoned doctor Ahmadreza Djalali has deteriorated sharply in a short time.

- Last week we received the message that before moving to Raja'i Shahr prison, he would be placed in solitary confinement in the prison where he has been so far, the Evin prison.

That was when he made a short call to his wife where he said goodbye, says Ami Hedenborg.

But now another step closer to the death penalty has been taken by Iran.

- What is worrying is that we have now received the news that this move has taken place, or is taking place in this now, she continues.

Uses hanging

Ami Hedenborg says that the Raja'i Shahr prison, where he has now been moved, is the place where the death penalty will probably be carried out.

- It is extremely alarming because it is even more difficult to influence the development then.

Iran is showing that they are serious, the prison he was transferred to is the actual place where the death penalty is carried out.

Is there any information on when this may happen?

- Iran uses hanging to carry out the death penalty and it usually happens in the mornings, early in the morning.

Since he will be in place tomorrow morning, it is therefore possible in practice that it happens already then.

- There was a concern that the execution would take place in secret, but it has been announced that his family in Iran, where his mother is, among others, will receive one last visit.

So the risk is great that it may happen soon, but we are waiting for further information.

Imprisoned in 2016

Djalali has lived with his family in Sweden since 2009 and he defended his dissertation in disaster medicine at Karolinska Institutet in 2012. He has been in Iranian prison since 2016, when he was arrested by the Iranian intelligence service during a conference trip to the country.

Djalali was charged with espionage and sentenced in 2017 to death.

Since then, he has mainly been imprisoned in the infamous Evin prison outside the capital Tehran.
