Berlin (dpa) - The federal government reacted with dismay to the fatal incident with a car in the Trier pedestrian zone.

"What happened in Trier is shocking," said government spokesman Steffen Seibert on Tuesday on Twitter.

"The thoughts are with the relatives of the victims, with the numerous injured and with everyone who is currently working to care for those affected."

In Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate, a car hit several people on Tuesday, two of whom were fatally injured, according to initial findings.

The driver, a 51-year-old German, was arrested, the police said.

The car had been secured.

A police spokesman spoke of several injured.

The background was initially unclear.
