Cologne (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) is hoping for a factual federal election campaign in the coming year.

He believes that the election campaigns of the 80s, in which people thrashed each other, are no longer in demand today.

"This Bundestag election campaign next year - at least that's how I hope for it - must be objective," Laschet said on Tuesday on WDR television.

He also believes that you can use arguments to campaign.

At the same time, he defended his own kind of politics - even in times of Corona.

«I know that it is more difficult to say: I weigh up.

I'll think about it for a day, ”said Laschet.

"When in doubt, quick banning is more popular, but it's still not my style."

Laschet is one of the applicants for the party leadership of the CDU. The federal election will take place in September 2021. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) then no longer wants to run.
