Munich (dpa / lby) - On New Year's Eve, there will be more firecracking zones in Bavaria than before.

This is a consequence of the corona restrictions.

As a survey by the German Press Agency showed, however, a number of cities point out that there were already fireworks prohibition zones in the past.

It is now being checked where more may have to be set up.

The country leaders and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) had decided that New Year's Eve fireworks should be prohibited in busy squares and streets in order to avoid larger groups.

The municipalities are now working to implement this requirement on site.

The city of Augsburg explains, for example, that due to the high number of infections, areas are already designated with a general mask requirement.

"It is conceivable that one leans on this spatial expansion and also forbids the use of fireworks there," says regulatory officer Frank Pintsch.

For example, employees in the administrations of Nuremberg, Bamberg and Ingolstadt are now checking where additional firecracking zones may have to be defined.

Such measures are not planned in Regensburg.

Because the Upper Palatinate city had already set a comprehensive ban on firecrackers for the old town, which was declared a World Heritage Site, in mid-November.
