  • Television: Nicole Kidman: from a pretty face to a Hollywood blockbuster

On March 31, 1995, singer Selena Quintanilla was assassinated by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar.

The queen of Tex-Mex was only 23 years old and in just a decade she had managed to sell more than 70 million copies of her albums, becoming one of the most successful Latin artists in history,

only behind Gloria Estefan and Shakira.

.

Two years after the star became a legend, Jennifer Lopez landed her first leading role, including a Golden Globe nomination, playing Selena in the biopic of the same name.

And on the 25th anniversary of his death, Netflix premieres on December 4 Selena, a series, just like the movie, authorized by his family that, in the words of its creator, Moisés Zamora, flees the tragedy to tell how this clan of Mexican origin fulfilled the American dream.

"From the beginning the idea was to make an inspiring, familiar series,

with a tone that really focused on the positive,"

explains the writer of other American series such as

American Crime

and

Star.

"Everyone agreed that Selena was a generous, empathetic, compassionate person, with a playful spirit, who always smiled. He would finish the concerts and spend two hours serving the fans. So, really,

we wanted to focus on that person and his legacy, "

which still today it survives as a bridge between Mexico and the United States.

Selena started singing when she was only nine years old.

His father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., was the one who discovered his talent by chance.

And then she began to design a band, Selena y los Dinos, where she sang, her brother AB Quintanilla played bass and her sister Suzette - executive producer of the Netflix series - drums.

Because the series succeeds in portraying the efforts of the head of the family to succeed in music and the hardships they went through to achieve it, all the palos (musicals) that he played until he found the formula that captivated generations of Mexican-Americans, and even how taught her daughter Spanish phonetically because Selena,

born in Texas, only spoke English

.

The child prodigy then became a promising youngster and her musical career began to interfere with her studies.

The teachers complained that she worked too hard for her age and that she always came to class tired.

"The family shared intimate moments, such as when Abraham took her out of school, so that we realized that this

was a father who saw a unique talent in his daughter,"

says Zamora in this regard.

"Abraham has a dream, which is to play music and be with his family all the time. And it is true that he is disciplined, but his goal is to create something that transcends together. What father would not want that?", Adds the screenwriter.

The director, Hiromi Kamata (

Miss Bala

),

agrees with

him saying: "I think that Moisés' greatest success with the characters is that they are not polarized. The tyrant father, in a series supported by the family, would be difficult," he says. funny, "but I think people are going to empathize with him and with everyone because they are multidimensional, they make mistakes and make bad decisions, like everyone else. And I, as a director, wanted to create that empathy, that the viewers,

that they felt like a member more from Los Dinos, "he

says.

Just as strict was Abraham with Selena's love affair with Chris Pérez, guitarist for Selena and Los Dinos, with whom he ended up secretly marrying after having forbidden them to be together.

"It's impossible to tell Selena's story without her romance. But we couldn't really talk to Chris. So we approached it a little bit like Romeo and Juliet,

but without so much tragedy

.

"

The tragedy did focus

on Selena's Secret

, a 2018 TV series dedicated to the murder of the singer and her relationship with Yolanda, who four years earlier founded her fan club and ended up climbing positions to become her personal assistant and manager of her clothing stores, Selena Etc. The creator, María Celeste Arrarás, was harshly criticized by the family

for trusting the murderer's version for

both her book and this series.

Which did not prevent it from being the most watched both on Telemundo in the United States and on TNT in Latin America.

Because everything Selena touches, especially after her passing, turns to gold.

About

40,000 people attended his funeral.

Two weeks later, the future president of the United States and then Governor of Texas, George W. Bush, declared the singer's birthday, April 16, a holiday and Selena's Day.

Time Inc. launched the Spanish edition of

People

magazine

in 1996 after a special edition dedicated to the deceased ran out.

And in 1998 the Selena Museum opened in her city, Corpus Christi.

Year after year the songs of the Mexican Madonna continue to lead the Billboard rankings, which last October named her the greatest Latin artist of all time.

In 2016, a posthumous collaboration with MAC Cosmetics sold out in hours, and the collection was relaunched in 2020. Today it has more than 3.6 million followers on Facebook and one million on Instagram.

And soon he will have his own Funko Pop.

"I love Selena, I grew up listening to her and there is no celebration where it does not sound,

so the approach of all of us comes from a very genuine place of respect and affection. She alone is a brand and she sells herself and creates a huge expectation. It reassures me to think that what we want is to honor his legacy, "says Kamata.

"In the current political context there has been a lot of publicity against Mexican immigrants, they have been politically criminalized, so dedicating a series to a Latino family that works against all obstacles to achieve a dream, I think is more relevant than never, "concludes Zamora.
