Nowhere in Germany have there been so many new infections with the corona virus as in the Lower Bavarian city of Passau.

The seven-day incidence - i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week - was 579.5 on Monday, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

Only the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia is similarly affected with an incidence value of 579.1.

The authorities in Passau are now researching the cause.

There are several retirement homes with corona cases, said Mayor Jürgen Dupper (SPD) on Monday evening.

There were series tests there, which have now been incorporated into the current figures.

In two facilities the situation is "very dramatic", in one home there were four deaths on Monday.

According to Dupper, communal accommodation for asylum seekers is also affected.

73 Covid-19 patients were treated at the Passau Clinic on Monday, ten of whom were in the intensive care unit, where in turn three also have to be ventilated.

The town hall chief announced strict corona restrictions on Friday after the incidence value rose to 440.

"The situation is diffuse and we absolutely have to reduce contacts," he said now.

The measures have been in effect since Saturday and should last at least a week.

The restrictions should be relaxed at a value of 300 at the earliest.

Still brisk border traffic

It is unclear what role the proximity to the border plays: It is still the case that Bavarians go to Austria to refuel and Austrians come to Bavaria to shop, said Dupper.

Changes in border traffic would have to be regulated at the federal level.

In Passau, people have only been allowed to leave their homes for a valid reason since Saturday, for example to go to work, to the doctor or to go shopping.

There is also a ban on alcohol in public places.

According to their own statements, the police are on duty with several patrol crews to check compliance with the rules.

Most of the time, people stuck to the guidelines.

The police announced on Monday that only isolated violations were found.

The city also decreed alternating classes for grades seven to eleven - with the exception of final classes at secondary and secondary schools.

If you want to visit a relative in a nursing home, you have to do a quick test beforehand.

The number of infections is also high in the Passau district, where the seven-day incidence on Monday was 360, and 391 in the Lower Bavarian district of Regen. The districts of Rottal-Inn and Freyung-Grafenau have also been affected recently.

Outside of Lower Bavaria, only Nuremberg was just over the 300 mark in the Free State of 307.3.

A spokesman for the Passau District Office also spoke of a diffuse situation.

Several factors played a role: individual retirement homes and asylum shelters, a large corona outbreak in the Vilshofen slaughterhouse and the high number of infections in neighboring districts.

The number of infections in the region cannot be determined at a single point.

The slaughterhouse in Vilshofen (Passau district) was closed last week after 80 employees were infected with the corona virus.

From Tuesday, operations should at least partially be resumed.
