Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - As of today, the Lord Mayor of Homburg, Rüdiger Schneidewind (SPD), who is currently suspended from duty, is again on trial for infidelity.

After the Federal Court of Justice had overturned a sentence of 15 months' probation at the beginning of the year, the proceedings are being reopened by the Saarbrücken Regional Court.

The 52-year-old was convicted after a costly detective affair in February 2019 because, according to the then chamber, he had employees of the municipal construction depot monitored by detectives without informing the city council.

The district and university town suffered financial damage from the costs of the detectives.

The detective agency had billed a total of almost 330,000 euros, of which the city paid a total of around 260,000 euros.

Schneidewind himself was only entitled to an independent contract award of up to 25,000 euros.

According to the Federal Court of Justice, it is to be examined whether a breach of trust could lie in the fact that the town hall chief did not terminate the contract immediately after becoming aware of an advance payment of 100,000 euros.

Four days of negotiations are scheduled for the process until December 15.
