In December 2018, Zineb Redouane, an octogenarian, died in Marseille hospital, twenty-four hours after being hit head-on by a tear gas grenade fired by the police, on the sidelines of a demonstration of "yellow vests" .

Two years after his death, an independent second opinion validates the thesis of a taut fire, contrary to the initial conclusions of the investigation.

Released on Monday evening, the counter-investigation was conducted by online investigative media Disclose and London-based research group Forensic Architecture.

Suspicion of collusion between the Marseille prosecutor's office and the police

At the beginning of December 2018, when the manifestation of Act III of "yellow vests" degenerates, Zineb Redouane, an 80-year-old Algerian, is hit in the face by bursts of tear gas canister in her apartment, located on the 4th floor.

Seriously injured, she died the next day in hospital during her anesthesia.

His death caused a stir in public opinion.

After several twists and turns, the case was disoriented in Lyon in August 2019 following suspicions of collusion between the Marseille prosecutor's office and the police officers involved.

The analysis conducted by Disclose, based on the ballistics report, CCTV images and detailed 3D modeling "contradicts the official expert report" which concluded that the grenade launcher which triggered the firing had been "used according to the regulations. recommendations and employment procedures in force in the national police ”and put the CRS out of question.

"Existence of danger at the time of firing"

One of the family's lawyers was convinced that it was a tense shot, strictly prohibited in front of an apartment building.

And according to the counter-investigation, "from the position of the CRS at the time of the shooting, the presence of several buildings directly opposite should have constituted, at the very least, a red alert".

Especially since the ammunition used, an MP7 type grenade, "is normally intended to hit a target located 100 meters away".

The image-by-image analysis of Disclose and Forensic Architecture makes it possible, according to them, to identify the trajectory of the shot in the direction of the victim's building as well as the position of the shooter.

The projectile, according to the counter-investigation, hit Zineb Redouane "after 37 meters".

Conclusion of Disclose, the 3D modeling of the environment “demonstrates the existence of a danger at the time of firing and the responsibilities of the shooter and the supervisor are clearly engaged”.

A Lyon magistrate, recalls Disclose, has yet to rule on the compliance of the shooting and the responsibility of the CRS in the death of Zineb Redouane.

Lawyers for the family hope the judge calls for further expertise.
