Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - After his election victory in Stuttgart, the new CDU Lord Mayor of the state capital, Frank Nopper, announced a departure for the Baden-Württemberg metropolis.

"For me, the hour of joy [...] is also an hour of departure for a Stuttgart that no longer falls short of its possibilities," said Nopper after counting the votes in most electoral districts.

"Stuttgart should shine more in the region, in Germany and in Europe."

The incumbent Lord Mayor of Backnang announced that he would rule in Stuttgart's town hall across parties and factions.

The 59-year-old received around 43 percent of the vote in the election on Sunday, his fiercest competitor, the independent candidate Marian Schreier, got around 37 percent of the vote after almost all of the votes were counted.
