Stuttgart (dpa) - In the second attempt, a new mayor will be elected in Stuttgart today.

The favorite to succeed the outgoing Lord Mayor Fritz Kuhn (Greens) is Backnang's Lord Mayor Frank Nopper from the CDU.

But opportunities are also attributed to the independent candidate Marian Schreier.

As an outsider, Stuttgart city councilor Hannes Rockenbauch from the SÖS / Linke parliamentary group is hoping for success.

In the first ballot three weeks ago, none of the applicants had received an absolute majority of the votes.

Incumbent Kuhn (65) renounces another possible term of office after eight years at the top of the town hall and retires at the beginning of January.

A total of 450,000 eligible voters can vote.

An election result is expected by 8.30 p.m.

Since it is the second choice, a simple majority of the valid votes decides.

There are no classic runoff elections for mayor elections in Baden-Württemberg.

The election will again take place under strict corona conditions.

Among other things, an everyday mask must be worn in election buildings and voting rooms.

In addition, voters must keep a minimum distance of 1.50 meters from other people.
