Vincenzo Desario, longtime director general of the Bank of Italy, died in Rome at the age of 87.

To announce it on Facebook is the son Davide.

Vincenzo Desario was born in Barletta in 1933 and joined the Bank of Italy in 1960, where he pursued his career as an inspector in the supervision of the institute until becoming central director for supervision in 1983.

Ten years later he was appointed Deputy General Manager and then assumed, in 1994, the position of General Manager, a role he held until 2006, when he was appointed Honorary General Manager.

Martusciello: poorer Italy

"Vincenzo Desario was always a safe haven for a country in a storm. His death grieves all the honest men of this country. In 1991 I chose to try the competition in the Bank of Italy, managing to win it precisely because I was fascinated by people like him. He leaves a void in an Italy short of ruling class "says Fulvio Martusciello, MEP of Forza Italia.
