Stollberg (dpa / sn) - The mayor of Stollberg in the Ore Mountains has commented on the cancellation of the mountain parade and the Christmas market with explosive statements.

"We can probably not throw all traditions overboard in every upcoming flu wave, push aside all previously applicable principles in order not to have to let people die," wrote Mayor Marcel Schmidt (Free Voters Union) in a letter to the community on the homepage the city was published.

Several media had previously reported about it.

According to Schmidt, the cancellations of the parade and the Christmas market took place against the background that the district is unable to approve these two events in view of the currently announced corona situation.

Schmidt had wanted to limit the Christmas market only for the residents of the city and to 1,000 visitors.

In the open air, this would not have meant an increased risk of infection, after all, the residents also meet at the bakery, in kindergarten and at school.

"Infection cannot be avoided among each other and if we do not bring in people from outside, then the risk is practically non-existent - especially if risk groups do not come on their own responsibility."

According to the "Free Press", the district administrator of the Erzgebirgskreis, Frank Vogel (CDU), was "shocked" by the letter.

As a political leader, you can't act like that.

"The need of the hour is to awaken the population's understanding that we have to take these measures now," said Vogel.
