This is what the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Surgeon, asked, in her opening speech at the

, relaunching a theme that will surely dominate the next elections to be held in May for the renewal of the Scottish Parliament.

"The Scots have the right to choose their future," said Sturgeon, arguing that "independence is within our grasp and if we show unity of purpose, humility and hard work, I have never been so sure we will achieve it." .

In response, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has already closed the way to the hypothesis of a new consultation, considering the one held six years and won by the supporters of Scotland's stay in the United Kingdom to be definitive.

But if the 2014 referendum saw a 55% prevalence of the anti-independence option, recent polls indicate that 62% of Scots would now be in favor of leaving London.

Earlier this month, Scottish independence activists caught the prime minister's comments saying that the creation of a decentralized parliament in Edinburgh was "a disaster".

In response, Sturgeon said the only way to protect parliament was "with independence".

The upcoming elections for the governing body in May are of paramount importance to both Sturgeon and Johnson, with the SNP arguing that a victory at the polls will provide a mandate for independence.

On Thursday he said a referendum could be held "in the first part" of the next parliamentary session.

"The people of Scotland have the right to choose their future. We are focusing all our efforts now on making sure we make that country better that they and future generations deserve," Sturgeon said.
