Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The Naturschutzbund (Nabu) Brandenburg urges that water consumption be significantly reduced in view of increasing drought.

"We have to deal more responsibly and sustainably with our scarce and valuable water resources," said chairman Friedhelm Schmitz-Jersch on Saturday, according to Nabu, at a state representatives' meeting on the Internet.

"The past three drought years also underscore the need for action."

Among other things, the association proposes a nationwide strategy for handling requests for water abstraction. Environment State Secretary Silvia Bender said that the climate crisis had long since arrived in Brandenburg, which was also shown by falling groundwater levels. The state government is currently working on a climate plan to reduce greenhouse gases.
