In 2018, during the presidential election, Jair Bolsonaro was comfortably elected.

Today, halfway through his term, it's a different story: of the 13 candidates that the far-right leader supported for the municipal elections,

9 were eliminated in the first round

.

Two won a town hall and two more qualified for the second round.

Among them, the outgoing mayor of Rio de Janeiro and ex-neo-Pentecostal pastor Marcelo Crivella largely lost to his predecessor, Eduardo Paes, according to polls.

It is above all the traditional center and center-right parties that have benefited from this retreat of the far right.

But the left is also doing well. In São Paulo, for example, the

socialist Guilherme Boulos

is qualified for this second round, as the communist Manuela d'Ávila in Porto Alegre.

According to analysts,

the Brazilians would make Jair Bolsonaro pay for

his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, including the systematic minimization of the virus and his refusal to restrict economic activities to control its spread.

Brazil is now the second most bereaved country in the world

, with 170,000 deaths from the coronavirus, as well as a country in the midst of a recession with unemployment of over 14%.
