Guilherme Boulos was a bit of

the sensation of the first round.

Young and charismatic, the leader of the Homeless Movement had outclassed all other left-wing candidates, including the one backed by former President Lula.

Between the two rounds, he had succeeded in reducing the gap between him in the polls of the outgoing mayor of São Paulo, the centrist Bruno Covas.

He was counting on a last televised debate to give a last boost.

But the far-left candidate tested positive, a few days after meeting a member of his Socialism and Freedom party, herself a carrier of the coronavirus.

He has no symptoms, according to those around him, but he had to isolate himself.

Guilherme Boulos is not the only candidate to be caught by the virus.

The outgoing mayor of Goiânia, in the center of the country, Maguito Vilela, big favorite to get a second term, has been hospitalized and intubated for ten days.
