A car has run off a bridge in northern Norway and fallen into a river from a height of ten meters.

The two people inside the vehicle were able to be rescued from the water - much thanks to a successful landing.

- Our task leader says that it was a pure stroke of luck that the car hit a large rock on which it stands.

When they were out in the boat, they stuck the whole oars in the water next to the car without being able to reach the bottom, says Lars Meland at the Norwegian police to NTB.

The accident took place in Bardu municipality, a few miles west of Treriksröset.

The police note that it was very slippery on the road.

The accident victims were a couple in their 70s.

They had contact with the police during the intensive rescue operation, which lasted for about an hour and involved divers who came by helicopter.

The car was partially filled with water.

The couple was flown to hospital in Tromsø, and it later emerged that the woman had survived completely unharmed and her husband's condition is described as stable.
