Straubing (dpa / lby) - The Bavarian cabinet has banned the burning of fireworks in busy squares and streets for New Year's Eve.

In many cities this is not a completely new topic, as the President of the Bavarian City Council, Markus Pannermayr (CSU) says.

In recent years, more and more cities have banned New Year's Eve fireworks in their centers, albeit mainly for fire safety reasons.

It is now important to find the right level when it comes to the ban on firecrackers - as is the case with the mask requirement in inner cities.

Then the ban on firecrackers should also meet with acceptance among the citizens, estimates the head of the city council, who has been mayor of Straubing since 2008.

Alternative programs to the fireworks, for example laser shows, would probably be canceled this year to avoid crowds.
