Accompanied by music, food and balloons, animal rights defenders in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, recently held a farewell party for the only Asian elephant in Pakistan, wishing it a "happy retirement".

After years of hard work, the 35-year-old Sri Lankan male elephant Kavan can finally go to Cambodia to "care for the elderly."

According to foreign media reports, Kavan has been living in the Malahaza Zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. Due to years of neglect, Kavan is overweight but is malnourished. Not only is he suffering from mental illness, but his toenails are not trampled for a long time. The suitable floor is cracked.

In addition, Kavan did not receive any protection measures in the scorching heat of Islamabad as high as 40°C.

The zoo said that Kavan's painful movements such as shaking his head continuously was because his partner Sahli died in 2012. Kavan felt very lonely and eager to find a new partner.

The park denied the fact that Kavan had been in a harsh living environment or chained.

In May 2020, a judge ordered the transfer of all animals in the zoo.

Salim Sheikh, spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change, said that after months of veterinary care and habitual training in a metal box, Kavan will fly to Cambodia next Sunday (December 6). Wildlife sanctuary "enjoy old age in peace."
