November 27, 2020 Distance learning "was not a perfect tool nor is it yet, but it was the only tool we had in order not to leave our students alone".

This is what the Education Minister Lucia Azzolina stressed to the General States of the 2020 digital school organized online by the Municipality of Bergamo.

In March, "the school arrived at our students' homes at a very difficult time. It was what the school community had to do: not to leave our students alone at the moment when they were suffering the most," Azzolina explained.

"Obviously the school is not starting from scratch because it has an excellent base, without which we would not have been able to react to the emergency. It was not all perfect but there was a quick response", he added.

In the future digital teaching will be in the classroom

"Today we talk about distance learning but tomorrow digital teaching will have to be done in the classroom, because the twenty-first century also wants this and because our young people also speak that language".

The minister stressed this.

For Azzolina, "digital didactics could be a way to enrich lessons, break down the barriers of the most fragile students with learning difficulties and - as far as administration is concerned - lighten as much as possible the enormous bureaucracy".

"The school - concluded the minister - must look to the future and politics must do so too, which cannot think of working for the here and now. The coronavirus emergency must lead us to think about the school we want".

On digital there is a historical gap to recover

"In the digital school we have invested more than 400 million in recent months, we have purchased more than 400 thousand devices and we have brought the connection where it was possible to do so, but much still needs to be done. a historical gap to be recovered and for this we need a gigantic effort to accelerate. From the crisis we are experiencing, we must necessarily make opportunities flourish ".

"In Italy, school has never been invested too much, indeed, very often it has been cut. Today, fortunately, the school is at the center of a healthy debate, because it was the coronavirus that made the whole country understand how much school is important".

"Paradoxically - he added - this difficult moment has been a huge acceleration engine for the school because in recent months what unfortunately could not be done has been done. Now we must treasure it, so that a better school can be born from the emergency. more digital ".

Bergamo schools lesson for all of us

"I wanted to be present in Bergamo on the occasion of the reopening of the schools, for the state exams, at the Quarenghi institute. I was able to thank the school community, I was able to meet the staff and students and the students who had not let themselves be discouraged, were not discouraged, they went on, they gave a lesson to all of us ".

This is what the education minister recalled, saying he was "excited".

Bergamo "is a city that has shown a lot of resilience, and which represents a symbolic place from the historical point of view, which had the strength to get back on its feet with incredible dignity, facing the pain of the loss of so many citizens. I think you can be considered example ".
