Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Five schools in the rural area of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be supported with millions of euros in construction projects and renovations in the coming year.

As in this year, 20 million euros are available for this, as the Ministry of Economics announced on Friday in Schwerin.

"This is of considerable importance, especially for locations in the area," said Economics Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) in a statement.

The program is aimed at schools in rural areas that could not be supported or not sufficiently supported by previously available programs.

According to the ministry, it is about extensive renovations, replacements, extensions or new buildings.

In some cases structural changes are necessary due to the increasing number of schoolchildren or the building fabric no longer meets the requirements.

The funds for the coming year will be used for projects at the regional school in Domsühl, the elementary school in Wittenburg (both in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim), at the regional school in Neukloster (in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg), the European school in Rövershagen and a primary school in Jördenstorf (both in the district Rostock).

According to the announcement, the respective funding amounts to between 1.3 and 5 million euros.
