Hamburg (dpa / lno) - In the Corona year 2020, the Hamburger Sportbund noticed a decline in the number of members in the Hanseatic city's sports clubs.

According to a message from Friday there are currently 521 118 memberships in 823 clubs.

In the previous year there were around 21,000 more memberships.

The number of young people under the age of 18 fell from 139 055 to 133 581.

In view of the consequences of the corona pandemic, HSB CEO Ralph Lehnert described the decline as "moderate".

"Above all, the lack of admissions with normal fluctuation led to the loss of members in many clubs over the summer," he was quoted in the message.

The inventory was carried out by November 18, 2020.

It therefore does not take into account the lockdown of club sports this month.

In the spring, club sports had not been possible for over seven weeks.

Even if there were easing in the summer, normality has not yet prevailed, the message said.

The new lockdown that took place at the beginning of November will only affect the number of members in the coming year.

"The current situation is very difficult for clubs and associations, as there are currently no signs of easing for the sport," said Lehnert.

The lockdown comes at an inopportune time, as many clubs have notice periods up to the end of the year.

"A larger exit wave is now unfortunately to be feared."

According to the HSB, clubs with a focus on health and fitness have lost members.

Clubs with offers in classic sports are "mostly stable".

There were declines in the disabled and rehabilitation sports association (minus 12.75 percent) and in the Association for Gymnastics and Leisure (VTF) (minus 6.8 percent).

The FC St. Pauli is different: The Kiezclub was able to look forward to an increase of 1155 new members (3.85 percent).
