Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The pace of the corona pandemic in Rhineland-Palatinate has weakened somewhat this week - at the same time, the number of deaths is increasing.

There was an increase of 14.9 percent in new infections in the past seven days to Friday, according to data from the state investigation office.

In the previous week the increase was 18.3 percent.

The number of people who died with or from Covid-19 rose by 23.6 percent in the week that ended.

A week earlier it was 15.4 percent.

The health authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate recorded 988 new corona infections on Friday.

A total of 42,645 laboratory-confirmed infections (as of 2.10 p.m.) have been registered since the pandemic began nine months ago, according to the State Health Office.

The number of deaths climbed by 17 to 508 within one day. According to the authorities, 17,275 people are currently infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus.

The so-called incidence, i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days, was 124.8 nationwide on Friday and thus slightly below the value of the previous week (128.6).

The highest incidence was on Friday in Speyer with 328.3 - that is lower than in the past few days.

The Palatinate city is followed by Mainz (194.0), the district of Kusel (190.8) and Worms (181.9).

The incidence is lowest in Trier at 49.3.
