Berlin (dpa) - After permanent setbacks, there are positive signals for German sport for the struggle for existence in the Corona crisis for the first time.

The federal government will increase its sports funding in the Olympic year 2021 from 279 to 293 million euros.

At the same time, the professional leagues in basketball, ice hockey or handball can continue to count on financial support from the federal government.

From January 1st to June 30th there will be another 200 million euros in immediate Corona aid.

"In a difficult situation for sports Germany, this is an extremely valuable signal and a ray of hope for many of those affected in sport," said Alfons Hörmann, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

"Our thanks go to all those involved who have worked with great commitment for weeks and months to put together a package that contributes to the protection and thus to the preservation of the important diversity of sport."

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, almost all amateur and popular sports are currently on hold.

For this reason, the DOSB fears “irreparable damage” to sport.

The financial support could now alleviate the consequences somewhat.

The professional athletes industry can also breathe a sigh of relief.

In addition to the continued payment of the millions in aid until the middle of next year, the cap on the maximum amount criticized by the professional leagues is also to be increased from 800,000 to three million euros per club.

"This ensures that all leagues can play the season to the end and that bankruptcies are actually averted by June 2021," said CDU sports politician Frank Steffel of the German press agency.

"This is a strong sign for the clubs and a political message that the professional leagues mean something to us."

The affected professional leagues, which also include the 3rd soccer league and the women's soccer league, had already received emergency aid of 200 million euros this year, with 80 percent of the lack of audience income due to the pandemic from April to December 2020 should.

So far, according to Steffel, 75 million euros have been requested or requested.

The remaining 125 million euros are to be carried over into the new year.

The funding ceilings for major sporting events will also be increased in the coming year.

World and European championships can now be supported by the BMI with up to 400,000 euros (previously 150,000) and other outstanding events with up to 200,000 euros (previously 75,000).

The funding program “Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture”, from which the sports facility infrastructure benefits significantly, was also increased.

The total volume for the funding round from February / March 2021 is now 600 million euros.
