Munich / Piesport (dpa / lrs) - Thomas Schanz from Piesport on the Moselle has been named “Chef of the Year” by the restaurant guide “Gault & Millau”.

"Far away from the metropolises, the modest, reserved Thomas Schanz quietly transformed his parents' business into one of the best restaurants in the republic," said the gastronomy critics at a virtual award ceremony on Thursday.

The "Restaurant Schanz" received 19 out of 20 possible points.

The newly named “Chef of the Year 2021” relies on French cuisine and has already received many awards, including two Michelin stars from the “Guide Michelin”.

He relies on exquisite French cuisine - combined with regional products.

For example, he composes a “Tapis from foie gras with tomato cherry relish” as well as a “Fricassee from Breton lobster” or “Hunsrück saddle of venison with Jerusalem artichoke”.

The gourmets from “Gault & Millau” certified that the 40-year-old had “meticulous work” and “a contemporary, complex style based on classic French product cuisine”.

In “Gault & Millau” for 2021 around 1000 restaurants across Germany are recommended - including the 500 best, as announced by Burda-Verlag.

More than 60 restaurants have been added to the guide.

That shows a “great gastronomic diversity in our country”.

The “Gault & Millau” is the most important gourmet guide in Germany alongside the “Guide Michelin”.
