Berlin (dpa) - The Bundestag has passed a reform of the Wine Act, which should make it easier for buyers to find their way around.

With the decision taken on Thursday evening, the MPs want to counteract the decline in German wine sales.

In the future, especially with quality wines, the origin should be more clearly recognizable on the label than before in order to emphasize the respective special characteristics.

German wines should become “more understandable” for consumers, said Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU).

The new system for the wine names is therefore a "huge opportunity".

The aim is to create a “pyramid of origin”: Wines from individual vineyards are at the top, and at the bottom are local wines without precise information on their origin.

This reform will be flanked by stronger marketing support.

The state subsidy for the sales promotion measures increases from 1.5 to 2.0 million euros per year.

In addition, the permitted cultivation area is being expanded by 0.3 percent annually.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this corresponds to an increase of around 300 hectares per year.

There are 13 wine-growing regions in Germany.

The largest cultivation areas can be found in Rheinhessen, the Palatinate and in Baden.
