Cottbus (dpa) - The 30th Film Festival (FFC) Cottbus will take place exclusively online this year due to the corona pandemic - in December.

The organizers announced this on Thursday.

Initially, a dual film festival with events in cinemas and digitally was planned.

Because the cinemas have to remain closed due to the corona measures that have been adopted, 150 films will be available as a nationwide streaming offer on the festival website from December 8th to 31st.

The festival in the Brandenburg student city, which is primarily dedicated to Eastern European film, was originally planned for the beginning of November - and was postponed by a month due to the partial lockdown.

"In times of the pandemic, the health of our visitors from near and far is our top priority," emphasized Andreas Stein, managing director of the FFC organizer pool production.

The festival will now be implemented digitally with all its might.

There is a wide range of options to watch the films on the website, in the live stream and on the YouTube channel.

A total of 201 films can be seen competing in four competitions.

Prizes with a total value of 72,000 euros and the coveted prize sculpture Lubina (Sorbian: the lovely) have been awarded.

In the past few years more than 22,000 viewers have visited the Festival of Eastern European Films in Cottbus.

As part of the “Filming Location Brandenburg” series, the festival is showing films that were made on the doorstep, such as the German-Polish co-production “Adventures of a Mathematican” - a European premiere.

According to program director Bernd Buder, in addition to the competitions and country focus, the thematic series with which historical and political culture are discussed are very important.

This year, among other things, it is about taking stock of the process of German unity and its effects on the individual and about a discussion about the roots of right-wing extremism in the 1990s.
