Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The new city ranking of the Institute of the German Economy (IW) casts a lot of shadow and light on North Rhine-Westphalia.

Once again, no city in the most populous federal state made it into the top ten in one of the three categories of the ranking that the IW created together with the «Wirtschaftwoche» and the Immobilienscout24 internet portal.

In the level ranking, which is supposed to show the current economic strength of the cities, Düsseldorf comes out best in 14th place from a NRW perspective.

The state capital has lost one rank compared to the previous year.

In this category, Düsseldorf scores particularly well in terms of quality of life.

Second best NRW city in the current situation is Münster in 20th place, 5 places better than 2019. Krefeld improved by 8 places, but remains in the lower third of the table with 55th place.

At the very bottom of the 71 independent cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, Gelsenkirchen ranks again this time.

Munich was again placed in first place.

The best-placed NRW city is Düsseldorf in 12th place. This category is also led by Munich.

For the first time, a sustainability index was created that is based on the UN goals for sustainable development and evaluates economic, ecological and social aspects.

In the ranking given by Regensburg, Bonn is in 17th place as the NRW city with the highest ranking.

The district cities of Duisburg, Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen and Herne occupy the last four places.
