Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The indoor hockey Bundesliga season has been canceled due to the corona pandemic and the associated lockdown measures.

The German Hockey Association (DHB) announced on Thursday.

“In the task force, we were always aware that an orderly league operation with a final final four could only take place if the leagues could start training and games in December.

By extending the lockdown to December 20, it is clear that the league will no longer be able to start in 2020, ”said DHB Vice President Henning Fastrich.

The league game should have started this weekend.

Because of the cancellation, the current German champions Rot-Weiss Köln (men) and Club an der Alster Hamburg (women) will start at the Indoor European Cup 2022.

The European Cup competitions for 2021 had already been canceled two weeks ago by the European Association EHF.

“We already know this from the spring, but we had hoped it would be a one-off event.

Now it's coming again.

My players now do independent athletic training three to four times a week.

It then also depends on self-discipline, "said Alster coach Jens George about the rejection.

"I am now considering whether I can and may at least offer 1: 1 training on the pitch."

"I'm of course in the fortunate position of having eight to ten national players in my squad who are allowed to train at the base," said George.

"But what the players and I lack, of course, are the social contacts."
