More than four years after the coup attempt in Turkey, a court in the capital Ankara has passed sentences against hundreds of those involved.

A total of 337 people were sentenced to life imprisonment, the state news agency Anadolu reported on Thursday.

Another 60 would have received prison sentences between 6 and almost 17 years.

In the main trial, 475 people were charged, including leaders.

All convicts were involved in the coup around the Akinci air base, it said.

From there it was directed.

70 people were acquitted.

The court pronounced sentences of up to 79 times life imprisonment under difficult conditions, among other things, for “attempted coup”, “assassination attempt on the president” and “deliberate homicide”.

High-ranking military officials, pilots and civilians were among the convicts.

On the evening of July 15, 2016, parts of the military had put into a coup against the Erdogan government.

In Istanbul and the capital Ankara there were clashes between putschists and security forces loyal to the state.

The putschists used tanks and fighter jets and fired, among other things, at civilians who opposed them, following an appeal by Erdogan.

The parliament building in Ankara was also shot at.

The Akinci air force base near the capital was an important base for the subversives in the night of the coup.

More than 250 people were killed and 2000 injured.

The uprising was eventually put down.

For example, pilots who are said to have bombed parliament and police headquarters during the night received maximum fines.

Four men who, according to the court, had planned an assassination attempt on the president were also sentenced to 79 times life imprisonment.

The process began on August 1, 2017.

Turkey blames the preacher Fethullah Gülen, who lives in the USA, for the coup attempt.

Gülen rejects that.

The Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu told the news agency on Thursday that to date 292,000 people have been arrested in operations against the Gülen movement, and 96,000 have been arrested.

The search for people involved has been ongoing since 2016.
