Hamburg (dpa / lno) - With a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, the expansion of Autobahn 7 south of the Elbe Tunnel is entering an important phase.

In order to enable the further expansion and new construction of the motorway in the port area near Waltershof, a temporary high dam with two lanes has been built there in recent weeks.

This is to ensure that all six lanes can be used despite the demolition of the entire tunnel ramp.

In the night of Sunday, the important north-south connection is to be completely closed again in order to set up a new traffic route through the construction site south of the Elbe tunnel.

The plan is to expand the entire four-kilometer section of the motorway south of the Elbe Tunnel to eight lanes.

In this area the motorway stands on stilts.

The State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Enak Ferlemann (CDU) and Hamburg State Councilor for Transport, Martin Bill (Greens), are expected to officially start this construction phase on Friday.
