Ulm (dpa) - There is a new master builder in Ulm.

The 55-year-old architect Heidi Vormann was elected by the majority of the church council on Tuesday evening, as announced by Dean Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl from the evangelical church district of Ulm.

Vormann was previously active as an architect for the Protestant parish in Bamberg.

She is now the second woman in the position that is important for Ulm.

The previous master builder Michael Hilbert had died this year.

Vormann prevailed against more than 20 applicants from all over Germany.

Three of the applicants had been proposed to the parish for election by the cathedral committee with experts from the preservation of monuments from the state and municipality in mid-November.

The master builder of the minster is the planning head of the minster, but at the same time also represents the famous church building in public.

In future, Vormann will head the employees of the Münster Building Authority.

Together with the stonemasons from the Münsterbauhütte, who are responsible for executing the plans, she is responsible for the maintenance and renovation of the cathedral.

The late medieval minster is the largest Protestant church in Germany and has the world's tallest church tower.

It is around 162 meters high.

In 2018, the work of the Minster and Cathedral Buildings in Ulm, Freiburg and Cologne was declared a national intangible cultural heritage.
