President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday in a speech on the Covid-19 epidemic that cinemas, theaters and museums should be able to resume their activity on December 15.

The Head of State, however, conditioned this decision on the evolution of the epidemic.

From December 15, "cinemas, theaters, museums, will be able to resume their activity, still within the framework of the health protocols which have been negotiated", declared the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday.

"A time-stamping system will make it possible to organize performances at the end of the day," he added.

The Head of State specified that this measure will come into force if the health situation allows it and that the confinement can be lifted on that date as provided by the executive.

"We need" the actors of culture

If the new daily contaminations remain around 5,000 and the number of people in intensive care between 2,500 and 3,000, "the confinement can be lifted" on December 15, said the head of state during his televised address.

Before their closure, cinemas and theaters operated with the wearing of masks throughout screenings and performances, and the condemnation of one out of two seats in theaters.

Cinemas and theaters, which claimed to be able to maintain their evening screenings, which are crucial for their profitability, therefore won their case thanks to this "time-stamping system".

The president explicitly thanked the world of culture, which considered itself forgotten since the start of the new confinement and the closure of theaters.

"We support all those involved in culture who have held on, innovated and found new audiences in this difficult context," greeted the Head of State.

"We need them (...) Culture is essential to our life as citizens," he insisted.
